1. Rock Garden
Rock Garden is a fantasy land which is constructed using rocks, cement, industrial waste and is indeed a marvel of creativity. This aesthetic wonder is truly unique and world acclaimed. It nestles in 20 acres of woods as an open-air exhibition hall, miniature maze and theater trove all rolled into a large fantasy land of astounding landscape and art. It is one of the best tourist spots that must be on your itinerary if you are visiting Chandigarh.
It's unpretentious entrance leads to a splendid arrangement of boulders, rocks, broken chinaware, broken and cast away bangles, discarded fluorescent tubes, coal, building waste and clay. These unexpected materials are all juxtaposed to create a dream world of soldiers, palaces, village life, monkeys, temples, and women. The beauty of the concealed gateways separating the open air sculptures is further enhanced by the pools, waterfalls and Open Air Theater with a proper stage. Numerous impressive performances have been staged on this small, however, very artistic open air theater.
Connoisseurs and artists across the globe flock to see this amazing creation with a daring concept and perennial appeal. Rock Garden was founded by Nek Chand who picked up the pieces of waste and shaped them with his creative genius into abstract, animal and human forms. These have been displayed innovatively as sculptures in the garden. There are several forms made of frames, mudguards, handlebars, forks, play marbles, metal wires, burnt bricks, etc. He thus demonstrated how waste can be fruitfully recycled and converted into something creative.
2. Sukhna Lake
The beautiful Sukhna Lake is nestled at the foothills of Shivaliks amid the picturesque surroundings. The place is quite popular among the visitors as well as the locals and is a perfect destination for solitude seekers. This is a man-made lake with a diameter of 3 sq km that stretches at the foothills of lower Himalayas. Its pristine blue water makes the lake a perfect location for a stream of morning walkers and joggers who can give a refreshing start to their day in the serene environment and fresh air.
The lake not only serves as a delight for photographers and artists but also is very popular for enjoying the water sports like boating, yachting, and water skiing under the clear skies. The Sukhna Lake is also a home to many species of migratory birds and fishes like cranes and Siberian ducks. The lake is bounded by the golf course on the south and offers mesmerizing views to travelers throughout the day. You can also enjoy the melodious strains of flute and other classical instruments played by famous musicians on the banks of the lake.
In the afternoon, you can enjoy a family picnic and a siesta to complete your venture in the lap of nature. In the evening also the lake area comes alive with families thronging the various eating joints and fast food shops. Children can enjoy the mini train and the numerous joy-rides. As the night descends, the lights from the Kasauli hill resort reflect in the lake and present a sight that will bewitch you.
3. Zakir Rose Garden
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is a largest rose garden in Asia and is spread over an area of 30 acres of land. It features more than 1600 species of roses on the 27 sections of land that is specked with thousands of rose bushes and emotional shade wellsprings. The garden is named after India’s previous President Dr. Zakir Hussain. The roses have been planted on the beautifully carved out lawns as well as flower beds.
The garden has been planned by Dr. M.S. Randhawa who had a profuse fondness for flowers and horticulture. The fragrant arrangement of the rose garden makes it a venue for yearly Rose festival which is celebrated either in the end of February or the beginning of March. This is one of the biggest celebrations in the city in which more than 200,000 people visit the garden. Several events, competitions, and cultural celebrations are organized during the festival. The garden also features several medicinal plants namely Bahera, Bel, Yellow Gulmohar, Camphor, and Harar.
